Bespoke Residential Architecture in Christchurch & Canterbury

Clarity. Form. Intent.

Christchurch — Canterbury — South Island

Choice Architecture is a Christchurch-based architectural designer specialising in bespoke residential new builds across Canterbury and the South Island.

We focus on architecturally significant homes set within rural landscapes, coastal environments, and hillside sites — projects where clarity of intent, disciplined decision-making, and long-term value matter.

Each commission is individually led and strategically guided from first principles through to completion.

Led by architectural designer Joe Armitage, the studio brings over a decade of residential design experience across Canterbury.

A Considered Approach to Residential Design in Christchurch

What We Design

We specialise exclusively in bespoke residential new builds.

Our work centres on individually commissioned homes shaped by landscape, orientation, structure, and proportion. We do not pursue volume housing or developer-led work. Instead, we focus on carefully considered residences where architectural integrity defines the outcome.

Each project is developed as a complete architectural composition, resolved from the ground up.

Individually designed homes shaped by site, brief, and context — developed from early concept through to consent-ready documentation.

Residential design for lifestyle blocks and rural properties, responding to landscape, climate, and long-term patterns of living.

Thoughtfully designed holiday homes and retreats that balance escape, durability, and ease of use across seasons.

Featured Project

Starvation Hill House
North Canterbury

A rural residence composed through restraint, proportion, and material integrity. Set within an expansive Canterbury landscape, the architecture balances strong primary form with carefully controlled glazing — framing distant views while maintaining shelter and privacy.

Developed as a bespoke residential new build, the home was resolved from the earliest concept stages to protect architectural intent, manage cost risk, and ensure disciplined execution through construction.

This project reflects our commitment to disciplined rural architecture — composed, restrained, and built to endure.

Client Perspective

“From our first meeting, Joe brought clarity and direction to what felt like an overwhelming process. We were making a significant investment, and his structured approach gave us confidence at every stage. The result is a home that feels calm, resolved, and perfectly suited to our site.”

“Building on a rural property came with challenges we hadn’t anticipated. Joe’s guidance early in the process helped us avoid costly missteps and make informed decisions. The finished home feels carefully considered and built to last.”

Residential Architectural Philosophy

Enduring residential architecture is determined in the earliest decisions — not in finishes or fixtures. Our approach to architectural design is grounded in clarity of intent, where each residential project is shaped from first principles rather than applied style.

Form, spatial hierarchy, structural logic, and orientation establish the foundation of a home that will endure. Through a disciplined approach to home design, these elements are resolved with precision, allowing the architecture to retain clarity, protect long-term value, and age with quiet confidence. This is the basis of a considered, bespoke architecture — homes that are individually designed in response to both site and lifestyle.

This approach to residential architectural design is particularly critical in exposed rural, coastal, and hillside environments, where climate, wind, sun, and landscape must be understood and integrated from the outset. In these contexts, architecture is not imposed, but carefully shaped — resulting in bespoke residential architecture that is both enduring and deeply connected to place.

Design that supports everyday life

Working With Us

Designing a new home represents a significant financial and lifestyle commitment.

Our responsibility extends beyond design — we provide structured architectural leadership, early cost awareness, and disciplined decision-making to reduce risk and prevent costly compromise as the project progresses.

Through a clear and methodical process, we guide projects from initial briefing through to consent-ready documentation and coordination, ensuring architectural intent remains protected at every stage.

We typically work with clients who value thoughtful architecture and see their home as a long-term investment in design quality.
